(re)sizing icons, images and avatars
overview
As a registered user of the NSX Registry you have the right to upload images to various galleries. It is important that you understand the types of images you may upload as well as the acceptable sizes.
YOU MUST UNDERSTAND THESE IMAGE RULES. FAILURE TO COMPLY WILL RESULT IN IMAGES BEING DELETED.
You may upload two image formats.
- JPG
- If it looks like a picture you took with a camera it should be a JPG.
- GIF
- If it looks like a drawing of Homer Simpson it should be a GIF.
there are three basic types of images you may upload.
- Avatar (150px x 150px max) (~5k-20k)
- An avatar is your visual persona online such as in the forums
- Icon (150px x 150px max) (~5k-20k)
- An icon is a smaller visual representation of a larger image, as in a thumbnail of an image. This is used to show many links to pictures on one page without bogging down the server and also makes navigating galleries more pleasant. YOU SHOULD NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE UPLOAD AN IMAGE LARGER THAN 125px x 125px. An icon may be a smaller version of a larger image or may also be a cropped portion of a larger image which can be very artful. And we know you artful we all want to be right? If you do not supply an icon, either a text link or a "No Icon Available" will appear instead.
- Image (350px x 350px max) (~10k-35k)
- Images are displayed in your galleries and on your owner pages when looking at specific things.
Note on sizing measurements: px = pixels; k = kilobytes; dpi = dots per inch;
Where you see 150px x 150px this indicates the max width/height dimensions. 120px x 123px is GOOD. 125px x 200px is BAD.
Where you see ~10k-35k this indicates that the actual file size on your hard drive should be approximately in that range. 8k, 19k, and 35k are GOOD. 37k, 40k, and 200k are BAD.
resizing your images and making icons
You may use just about any image editing program to resize your images e.g. MS Paint, Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro, PhotoPaint, etc...
Later we will add specific instructions for various image editing software.
